Lord Arthur Savile is young, pleasant and not overburdened with brains.
When, on the eve of his wedding, he is informed that he is destined to commit a murder—just the one—at some unspecified point in the future, Arthur decides it would be quite unfair to enter matrimony with such a threat hanging over his head, and by association, over that of his beloved Sybil.
He therefore resolves to get it over with: to take matters into his own hands and commit the murder before the wedding. And so, aided and abetted by his butler, Baines, and the new maid, Nellie, Arthur embarks upon his life of crime.
